Kapaia Foundation
ABOUT US
The Kapaia Swinging Bridge was built by the County of Kaua'i for the villagers of Kapaia Valley in 1948 and closed in 2006 due to maintenance neglect. In 2007, a group of community members took on the project of urging the county to restore the historic bridge. Kapaia Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit association, was established to accomplish a daunting task in an organized manner. The vision was always to first focus on restoring the Kapaia Swinging Bridge. Once restored, we would be able to pursue other projects related to the history of Kapaia Valley as well as broader historical and cultural interests related to Kaua'i during the sugar plantation period of Hawaiian history.
In 2018, the Kapaia Swinging Bridge was rebuilt according to the original plans drawn in 1948. The bridge was transferred from the county to Kapaia Foundation. We are the caretakers and protectors of the Kapaia Swinging Bridge. Volunteers sweep and clean the bridge and its surroundings regularly. We participate in historical, cultural and community aid projects that benefit our island. The reopening of the Kapaia Swinging Bridge has opened many paths of opportunity for Kapaia Foundation to be of benefit to our community. We are excited of the possibilities. Keep visiting our website for project updates.
